ACA Assurance and Risk Fundamentals: what's on the exam

Assurance is as much about precise definitions as it is about judgement. Learn the language, then apply it to scenarios.

Updated 14 June 2026

Assurance and Risk Fundamentals introduces what an assurance engagement is, why it adds value, and how a practitioner plans and carries one out. Much of the exam tests whether you know the concepts precisely, then can apply them to short scenarios.

What’s on the exam

  • The purpose and benefits of assurance, and who relies on it
  • Levels of assurance — reasonable versus limited
  • The assurance engagement process, from acceptance to reporting
  • Risk and materiality at an introductory level
  • Internal control systems and their limitations
  • Gathering sufficient, appropriate evidence
  • Professional ethics as they apply to assurance providers

How to approach it

Nail the definitions first — the difference between reasonable and limited assurance, what makes evidence 'sufficient and appropriate', and the stages of an engagement come up repeatedly.

Then practise applying them: most marks come from recognising which concept a short scenario is really testing, so question practice beats passive reading here.
