Certificate module
ACA Business Law: the topics examined and how to revise
A recall-heavy module. The win is structured memory: know the rules, then spot which one a scenario triggers.
Updated 14 June 2026
Business Law gives you the legal context that a chartered accountant works within — how the legal system is organised and the rules that govern contracts, companies and employment. It is one of the more knowledge-heavy Certificate modules.
What’s on the exam
- The English legal system and sources of law
- Contract law: formation, terms, breach and remedies
- The law of agency
- Company law: incorporation, directors' duties and share capital
- Partnerships
- Employment law basics
- An introduction to insolvency
How to approach it
This module rewards structured memory more than calculation. Build concise summaries of each rule area and test yourself with questions rather than re-reading the text.
Most exam marks come from applying a rule to a short scenario, so practise spotting which legal principle a fact pattern is really about — that recognition is the skill being tested.
